What is fishkeeping?

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, my family and those whom God loves:

Fishkeeping is what people do when they keep fish in a home aquarium or garden pond. Although there are some who do this for business, most people keep fish as a hobby – for the simply joy of watching and caring for a small piece of nature.

Fishkeeping is nowhere close to being as popular as reading, board games and listening to music, but most people have probably had a goldfish at one point in their life. Some people are content with keeping one aquarium in their home, enjoying just looking at the fish and the calmness it can bring. Others get infected by what is known as Multiple tank syndrome (MTS) and begin keeping an ever increasing number of aquariums. It is not unusual for such a person to dedicate an entire room to the hobby.

Since fishkeeping involves living creatures it’s very important that they be cared for. Never get an aquarium if you don’t have time to care for your fish and plants. It doesn’t take a lot of time to do this, perhaps a few minutes every day and an hour or so every one or two weeks.

Fishkeeping can be easy or challenging. Most beginners are best to select fish and plants that are very hardy to care for. Then as one gains experience you can keep ever more challenging fish and plants. Although not every fish or plant will be available from your local aquatic supplier, some may be accessible through online markets.

Fishkeeping can be divided into several types:
Based on water type…
🐟 Freshwater – fish and plants that exist in fresh water environments.
🐟 Brackish water – fish and plants living in a salt-fresh water mix.
🐟 Saltwater – fish and plants living in a marine environment (ocean).
Based on a community or single species…
🐟 For example, a person may have many species of fish that can co-habit or only a single species like Jack Dempsey Cichlids that can or cannot cohabit with other fish.
Based solely on plants or no plants…
🐟 Hobbyists who focus their aquariums on plants and aquarium design are involved in what is known as “aquascaping” and although it may include fish, the plants and the design of the aquarium are most important.
🐟 Hobbyists can also maintain an aquarium with fish only, using hardscape materials and artificial plants as backdrop.

How much does it cost to be involved in this hobby? There are many variables to this question. For example, a small aquarium will cost less than a large one. Marine setups are more expensive than freshwater. If you can purchase a used tank with some good condition equipment that will save some money. Buying common freshwater fish are less than marine fish and how many fish you actually have is a factor too. In 2020 the average cost of a new set up would be in the range of $400-600.

So I hope this gives you an idea of what fishkeeping is and could be for you. If you…

🐟 enjoy watching those fish at a pet store or growing plants;
🐟 have some disposable income that you don’t mind spending initially and regulatory;
🐟 are disciplined enough to care for some of God’s creatures; and
🐟 have the time, then…

perhaps you would like to dive in and discover the beauty of God’s creation captured in a small space.

Grace be with you,
